FAQ
- Do the electrodes hurt?
Some aspects of the treatment can be uncomfortable, but not painful. VitalStim electrodes provide sensory stimulation to the areas targeted, for 59 seconds of each minute. The system doesn’t aim to contract the muscle, like some e-stim systems do. Whether the therapist is placing the electrodes on the neck or face, there is a chance that an area may be too sensitive to receive the highest levels of input on the Vital Stim device.
- Can I do this myself, at home?
The treatment can only be provided by a certified professional. It is not recommended to use an e-stim device at home to target intricate muscles of the neck or face.
- Will I be able to move normally after the intervention is complete?
After each treatment, you should feel absolutely normal. You should not experience any stiffness or pain, and these would indicate a complication of the intervention.
The Program
Vital Stim is an 8-week program designed with the patient in mind. The frequency and progression of the therapy is at the patient’s discretion. Each person will experience this intervention differently. With a 90% success rate, positive changes are expected. However, tolerance of the intervention may result in more or less muscular response to the electrodes. The electrodes are placed directly on the skin with a voltage to stimulate the underlying muscle.
AM I a candidate
You may be a candidate for this intervention if you suffer persistent effects of swallowing or speech deficits following a traumatic event such as a stroke or experience generalized weakness.
